Stimulate the scalp…..EVERYDAY!

If possible, you will need to make sure that you make the attempt to comb, brush or massage your child’s hair daily. Some styles will prevent this, but otherwise there should not be any reasons why this should not be done. If you child has little to no hair, you can still gently massage their scalp stimulating their hair follicles.

Moisturize

Just like your skin, your child’s hair needs sufficient moisture. My favorite moisturizer is by Just For Me. I like the way it smells and the all-day coverage it provides my little girl. I also thinks it’s pretty cool that it is the same product my mom used on my hair when I was a little girl.

Use Age-Appropriate Products

Be sure that the product that you choose to use for your child’s hair does not contain any harsh chemicals that can damage their hair or texture. Our baby is almost a year old and we still use baby wash to wash her hair. Since her hair is growing pretty fast, it is necessary for us to use a child’s detangler. However, if you are low on funds water works great as a detangler. We also use a moisturizer and an oil on her hair, but we caution you to be careful not to overdo application. So that you prevent unnecessary build up and clogging of pores.

Create protective hairstyles

Braids, twists, and ponytails are protective hairstyles that you can create for your baby. Yes, you can braid, twist and put ponytails in your child’s hair as long as they have enough hair to do so. We started with pony tails and braids when Zariah was just 3 months old. I think this has also helped prevent her from being tender-headed or extra sensitive to the detangling process. Remember that the styles that you create are intended to be protective. Pay close attention to how tight the braids and ponytails are and how heavy the accessories are. Significant tension and excessive accessory weight could cause unwanted damage.

Be patient

Every child like every adult will have unique hair textures and growth patterns. Your child’s hair may grow slower or faster than others. The most important thing for you to do is to maintain their hair daily so that when it does grow, it will grow to be healthy and beautiful.
